Stray ink mark at the crown, else a nice, sharp example. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by White on the front free endpaper to a fellow newspaperman (and Emporian) in the year of publication: For Wirt McCarty, a hustler from Hustlersville, with the kind regards of W. " White developed a reputation as the "voice of Middle America through his columns, novels, and short stories. McCarty, according to his obituary, was born in Emporia, and became a journalist after working several entry-level newspaper jobs, including at White's Emporia Gazette.

McCarty soon moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he started his own daily newspaper, which was thriving at the time of his early death form typhoid fever in 1911. McCarty would have been 21 at the time of this inscription, thus was probably working in White's orbit and still attending the College of Emporia at the time of the inscription.
