After an unfortunate accident in which he became paralyzed, he became a writer of novels, stories, and screenplays, including West Point of the Air, China Clipper, Sea Devils, Moon Over Burma, etc. His biographical history Wings for Men served as the inspiration for the great John Ford film The Wings of Eagles starring John Wayne.
