Joe LeSueur, to whom this copy belonged and was inscribed, was a poet, editor, and screenwriter closely associated with the New York School of the 60s. A close friend and longtime roommate of Frank O'Hara, LeSueur circulated through the city's artistic and literary social scene.

His immediate circle is depicted in Wynn Chamberlain's 1964 portrait Poets Dressed and Undressed, in which LeSueur and O'Hara appear alongside Joe Brainard, to whom The Sonnets is dedicated.
