After starting work as a trainee animator and a lucky break as an extra in his first movie, he went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), but left after one year to pursue his acting career in the theatre. National Service beckoned, after which he appeared on stage and television in a number of shows.
He went to America in the early 1950s and was contracted to MGM and then Warner Brothers Studios, where he starred in several TV series and films. Two British TV series - The Saint and The Persuaders! - made him a household name in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1973, he starred in his first James Bond movie, Live and Let Die, and went on to play 007 in another six Bond movies.
Appointed Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF in 1991, he was knighted for his services to charity in 2003. He has three children and lives in Monaco with his wife, Kristina.
