In Protection or Free Trade, Henry George examines the adverse effects of tariffs on the working classes. He argues that tariffs keep prices high for consumers, while failing to produce any increase in overall wages. In addition, tariffs protect monopolistic companies from competition, thus augmenting their power. Among the many praises for Protection or Free Trade, Milton Friedman said that it was the most rhetorically brilliant work ever written on trade.
As recently as 2009, it has been called the best-argued tract on free trade to this day. Blue cloth blind stamped with design & frame on front & rear boards; gilt titles to spine. Signed/inscribed by author on second front end paper with ink blot obscuring part of "Donn".
Previous owner's inscription on title page indicating they had received the book from Donn Piatt in 1889. Small inked correction to page 1; penciled price to top of front pastedown. Mild, even age-toning to pages with some scattered spotting to page margins. Otherwise, interior is tight & unmarked. Soiling, rubbing & wear to edges of page block.Damp staining around edges of front & rear covers; rubbing & discoloration to front & rear covers; wear to corners & spine ends, with boards showing a bit; mild rubbing & wear along edges & to spine edges. Showing the effects of age & less-than-ideal storage, but still a solid & attractive signed copy of this major work by Henry George. A great addition to your collection or as a gift.
