Marie Carmichael Stopes, illustrated by Arthur Rackham. A Road to Fairyland - 1926.

Inscribed by the author to the front endpaper: To H. Roe with love from Erica Fay. The recipient being Humphrey Verdon Roe, Marie Stopes' second husband, who played a crucial role in her career as a sexologist and birth control campaigner, assisting with the initial financing of Married Love in 1918. The book is firmly bound in clean grey cloth, lettered in dark blue to the front board and spine, the corners and spine ends are bumped.

The text block is slightly foxed, toned and dusty. The dust jacket, priced at 5 /- net and with the Rackham frontispiece replicated to the front cover, is the original and not price clipped, it is grubby and lightly toned, with small areas of loss and short closed tears with associated creasing to the edges, some repaired to the reverse with small pieces of archival tape. Something of a departure for the scientist and, by this stage of her career, famous advocate of birth control and sexology, a collection of highly entertaining and suitably bizarre and grotesque fairy stories, complete with a frontispiece by Arthur Rackham. From the estate of Harry Verdon Stopes-Roe (Marie Stopes' son) and his wife, Mary Stopes-Roe (formerly Wallis, Mary being the daughter of engineer and scientist, Sir Barnes Neville Wallis). This item is in the category "Books, Comics & Magazines\Antiquarian & Collectable".
