For me, Rosalynn, our children, and my mother, the four years I spent as President were for the most part an exciting and rewarding time. The only one of our family who really suffered because of the experience was my brother Billy. He was a charismatic media personality during Carter's Administration, but he ran into trouble when he visited Libya in 1978. His visit led to congressional inquiries, which were eventually settled, and no charges were pursued. Billy Carter died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 51. He is survived by his wife, and high school sweetheart, Sybil Spires, who resides in Plains, GA.
