Bound in half-leather with gilt titling, four raised bands and blindstamped design to spine, and marbled paper covered boards. 22 x 13.5cm, xi + 702pp. This title was the first serious biography of Horatio Nelson, from his birth through to his death and describing his Naval career and battles. The book has a frontispiece portrait of Nelson engraved by Anthony Cardon, after an engraving by Henry Edridge.
The appendices to the rear of the book give details of command, those killed or wounded at the action under Jervis and at the Nile, correspondence from Vice Admiral Lord Collingwood, and a list of the combined fleet of the French and Spanish, and how they were disposed of. A complete copy but with wear. The boards and joints are rubbed and chipped, and the inner binding is weak at the title page. There has been some repair to page edges (professionally done). The main body of text is in good order, with age-toning and some spotted foxing but the book remains in strong readable condition, and a rare copy to find signed.Previous owner's name to ffep (C Hawke, 1862).
