The release of this book was probably the most anticipated and biggest book launch of 2020. The first 2 books in the series,' Wolf Hall' and' Bring Up The Bodies' both won the Booker Prize, making Hilary Mantel the first woman to win the prize twice and only the 4th author to have done so (now 5 authors after Margaret Atwood's shared win in 2019). This concluding/3rd part of the series was considered to be a very strong favourite for the 2020 Booker Prize, which would have made her the first author to have 3 Booker Prize award wins. She was selected on the Longlist but to nearly everyone's surprise, this book was not selected on the Shortlist. The Mirror and The Light', published on 5 March 2020 by Fourth Estate, London, 1st edition, large modern hardback, should be [xviii] + 883 pages.
This signed limited cloth bound edition is signed by the author. No dustjacket as issued for this special edition. The book has a black ribbon page marker. This copy also comes with an exclusive promotional bookmark for this release, as well as a copy of the'World of Wolf Hall' reading guide.
This is a heavy book weighing 1.3kg before being securely packed. The stunning conclusion to Hilary Mantel's Man Booker Prize-winning Wolf Hall trilogy.
If you cannot speak truth at a beheading, when can you speak it? Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith's son from Putney emerges from the spring's bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army. Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry's regime to breaking point, Cromwell's robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. But can a nation, or a person, shed the past like a skin?Do the dead continually unbury themselves? What will you do, the Spanish ambassador asks Cromwell, when the king turns on you, as sooner or later he turns on everyone close to him? The Mirror and the Light.
Hilary Mantel brings to a triumphant close the trilogy she began with. She traces the final years of Thomas Cromwell, the boy from nowhere who climbs to the heights of power, offering a defining portrait of predator and prey, of a ferocious contest between present and past, between royal will and a common man's vision: of a modern nation making itself through conflict, passion and courage.
