Scarce inscribed first edition of this picture book by the author of THE SNOWY DAY, illustrated throughout with exceptional panoramic cityscapes and scenes from the protagonist's imagined Halloween plane flight. Very good plus in very good jacket. The charm of this very simple tale develops in part from the fact that Mr. Keats, who died shortly before the show opened, designed the sets and the costumes from his own drawings for the book, so the visual quality is transferred to the stage with no change in point of view. In 1983, THE TRIP was adapted for the stage as "Captain Louie" by Steven Schwartz (of Godspell, Pippin, and Wicked fame).
The musical's sets and costumes were designed by Keats after his own illustrations, one of the artist's last completed projects before his untimely death later that same year. Read more: John Wilson, Children's Theater in'The Trip,' The New York Times. New York: Greenwillow Books, 1978.
Inscribed "to Omar - with warmest regards" by Keats on front free endpaper. Mild wear and some bowing to boards. Moderate creasing and edgewear to jacket, with a couple tiny chips and short closed tears to extremities. Type Punch Matrix is a rare book firm founded by Rebecca Romney and Brian Cassidy.
