A very scarce limited edition of this biography of Marianne Williams, with hand written letter and signed by the author. First Edition, Limited Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce. This book weighs 0.5 KG when packed.
The first edition of this work limited to sixty copies printed for the press, this volume being number 45. Of this book, the author privately printed one hundred and twenty copies, of which she took sixty, while the other sixty went to the printer, not for sale. The volume was subsequently reprinted as paperback.
The Maori women call her. From the library of Eric Kenneth Prentice Back. Kenn Back was a British meteorologist with the British Antarctic survey for many years. He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations.
His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration. Signed by the author to title page as well as front free endpaper, with a dedication to Kenn Back. With a letter to Kenn Back by the author: 12/1/85 Dear Kenn, We were so sad that you couldn't join our Christmas'party' here. I hope the Perriams at least shared their Christmas dinner with you. We toasted you "in absentia". I must hasten to add that it was almost worth not being able to have you because it's caused you to write us that incredibly humorous letter about Sabena and her catastrophic effect on Sunday males near and far. I read it out loud to Sam and Sally and we laughed til the tears streamed down our cheeks. Then we took it down to Roland and Betty - we laughed even more at the second reading and they rolled around in their chairs helpless with mirth. I haven't laughed real "belly" laughter like that for ages and it did us all a power of good. You really must write a book about your travels and encounters because you have the gift of creating word pictures of people and situations.I do hope that you will be seat a colour photo of Sabena and the ram as a reward for your bravery in trying to tame the previous 2 "models". You could frame it and have it to console you for the departure of Sabena from the barrera landscape of Bendigo!
Better still, you could show it to us! I hope you had no brushes with bulls or peacock-induced power failures while you were acting as solo parent to your menagerie of beasts, birds, and children.
We had a very pleasant Christmas with lots of friends coming and going for meals and snacks. Mrs Norris and her cats - Taurus and Senany, settled in happily over Christmas and New Year, as we managed to keep Muffin and the cats away from each other.
We had a lovely day's outing to Akaroa in perfect weather and had lots of swims. Sally was with us till January, when she left to go camping on the Coromandel Peninsula. Since then we've been kept busy in the garden which has needed constant watering.We've had almost unbroken day, north-west days with prodigious winds at times and everything is beginning to get a dried up, shrivelled book. We go north to Auckland on Jan 26th to await the arrival of (a) our son brightspear from St.
Helens on the 28th for two weeks and (b) Sam's eldest sister from Winchester on Feb 2nd. We go with them to Whitianga on the Coromandel til the 8th when we fly back here. Chris has to leave because of a conference in the U. On the 11th byt Priscilla will be with us til March 6th. Anyway, we hope to see you when you come to Purau this month and to catch up on your news before you head off to Australia. With our love and best wishes for 1985. Kenn Back's bookplate to front pastedown. Pages are bright and clean.Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear. Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy. Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones. Often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy. Some more serious faults as will.
