When Beatrix Potter was turned away by publishers, she decided to print a small run of her first book'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' in 1901 and used Strangeway & Sons, London. This book is from the First Private Printing in December 1901, and rarer still, it has been signed and inscribed by Beatrix Potter.

Beatrix Potter also write other letters to children with her now famous characters. The letters were so popular with the children that she decided to turn the letters into books. This book should not be confused with the second printing of 200 copies printed in February 1901 which has a round spine and which is known as as a First Private Edition 2nd Printing. Saw the marketability of Beatrix's'Little Bunny Book' they decided to publish it themselves even though they had previously refused the book.

They revised the book with Beatrix to include full colour illustrations and a colour front piece, and 1902 the first Trade Edition was Published by F. Original olive-green boards (faded to beige), with flat spine.
