It is even rarer to find a copy inscribed by the author. The inscription is contemporary - dating to the same month the book was published in December 1901! Many of Beatrix Potters first publication were given as gifts to family and friends. This book is the first publication in which the famous Peter Rabbit appeared and is the earliest copy of'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'.
When Beatrix Potter was turned away by publishers, she decided to print a small run of her first book'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' in 1901 and used Strangeway & Sons, London. This book is from the First Private Printing in December 1901, and rarer still, it has been signed and inscribed by Beatrix Potter.
Peter Rabbit was a real bunny and Beatrix Potters pet. Peter Rabbit first appeared in a letter Beatrix potter wrote in 1893 to five year old Noel Moore, the son of Beatrixs former governess.
Beatrix Potter also write other letters to children with her now famous characters. The letters were so popular with the children that she decided to turn the letters into books. This book should not be confused with the second printing of 200 copies printed in February 1901 which has a round spine and which is known as as a First Private Edition 2nd Printing. Saw the marketability of Beatrix's'Little Bunny Book' they decided to publish it themselves even though they had previously refused the book.
They revised the book with Beatrix to include full colour illustrations and a colour front piece, and 1902 the first Trade Edition was Published by F. Original olive-green boards (faded to beige), with flat spine.
Signature, dedication and date clear and written in brown ink. There is also a later signature above the Authors inscription Joan Lamb. Professionally restoration to spine and hinges carried out carefully and sympathetically leaving original spine placed over new spine. Very slight bow to cover.
Upper cover with one or two light marks. Binding tight and book can be enjoyed without worry. Colour frontispiece, woodblock engravings from the author's line drawings throughout.

Peter Rabbit has been made from luxurious cotton velvet and stands at 22cm, wearing a black & white steiff tag in his ear. You will also receive a rare Facsimile copy of the 1901 The Tale of Peter Rabbit published by F. Warne and co in 2012 (not pictured), as well as a unique original water colour painting of several Peter Rabbit illustrations which was commissioned by Books With Art and painted by talented Lake District artist Frances Hamlett. The piece has been painted in such as way that it looks like it is a work in progress by Beatrix Potter, complete with paint brush.
