THE FAIRIES, A CHILD'S SONG [ILLUSTRATED FAIRY CLASSIC SIGNED BY LEWIS CARROLL]. De La Rue & Co. 1st Edition, oblong 8vo (20cm), 23pp (1), adverts, adverts to rear cover and inside cover. Title page vignette and 22 illustrations (6 coloured). Text is part of the monochrome (sepia) illustrations.

Inscribed by Lewis Carroll to title page'Dolly, with love, from CLD, Xmas tide/'83. Pencil note by Alex R.

Cross, also on title page. Loosely inserted is a TLS from Charles H Morris to Alex R. Cross regarding a collection of children's books (including the present work), in which he discusses Lewis Carroll's relationship with E. Gertrude Thomson, the illustrator of'The Fairies' and confirms that Carroll's signature'is undoubtedly genuine.

He wrote several volumes of lyric verse, and the poem in the present work, which first appeared in 1850, has been much anthologised. There is professional restoration to the original spine, which shows wear to the exterior. Sewn binding firm, small area of loss to lower rear cover.

Some minor foxing and soiling. A unique copy of a scarce illustrated work. The pencil inscription by Dolly's son, (Paton's grandson) Alex. Cross explains that she was 13 when she received the book as a Christmas gift from'CLD' (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832- 1898, most widely known by his pen name - Lewis Carroll). Dodgson was a keen admirer of Paton's work and had approached him to illustrate'Through the Looking-Glass' (1871) in 1868, before Sir John Tenniel finally accepted the commission.

They met in person for the first time in Lamlash, Isle of Arran in 1871 when Dodgson travelled there with the express purpose of meeting Paton. Dodgson noted in his diary that the 15th of September 1871 was a day to be.

"Marked with a white stone" [.] This morning I got up at 6 ½, and reached Lamlash about 11, left my bag at the little inn and walked up to Glenkill House.

My reception was as kind as could be'. This item is in the category "Books, Comics & Magazines\Antiquarian & Collectable".
