Bookplate and was engraved by Edwin Davis French. Davis produced over 300 fine bookpates between 1893 and his death, and he was a founding member of the American Fine Arts Society. Many of his clients were members of the Grolier Club, although we do not know if Robinson was a member. The bindings show some rubbing and wear, and there are spots of abrasions on some of the hinges and spine ends.
A few of the raised bands are bumped or scuffed. Still, an attractive set overall. The gilt is still bright and the bindings are sound. Gilt inner dentelles, and all edges gilt. A few of the pages have been remargained at the fore edges, not affecting the text.
This set contains 20 full-page copperplate engravings. None of the plates are x-rated, but some are suggestive. Some versions of this work come with up to 30 plates, and it appears that some of the more salacious plates were not included in some of the sets. The plates are tipped in on different paper than that on which the text is printed. Most of the plates are dated 1780. We have found one plate in Volume 6 which is dated 1797. In Volume 6 we have found a plate dated 1796 and another dated 1797. There are plates dated 1780 in all of the volumes, included in these two. Volume I: 40, 42, 40, 45, 54, 122, 48 pages. Dated 1779 on title page. 4 copperplate engravings, dated 1780. Volume II: 67, 28, 45, 13, 98, 24, 38, 76 pages. 3 copperplate engravings, dated 1780. Volume III: 53, 25, 78, 29, 82, 37, 19, 76 pages. Volume IV: 70, 20, 199, 25, 19, 26, 22 pages. Dated 1780 on title page (but dated 1779 on spine). 2 copperplate engravings, dated 1780. Volume V: 52, 48, 21, 304, (1) pages. Dated 1780 on title page. 2 copperplate engravings; one is dated 1780 and one is dated 1797. Volume VI: 202, 29, 21, 17, 59, 15, 60 pages.
