Original 1940 Edition and First Print. Edward Weston and Charis Wilson: California and the West. Photographs by Edward Weston with text by Charis Wilson.
With the scarce dust jacket. SIGNED by Edward Weston on the first free endpaper. 127 pages with 96 black and white photos on glossy paper.
The table of contents is as follows: I. Mojave and Colorado Deserts: Granite and Sandstone; III. Colorado Desert: The Old Butterfield Stage Route; IV.
Desert and Coast: Farewell to the South; V. High Sierra: Lake Ediza; VI. High Sierra: Tenaya Lake and Mt.
One-Week Trip: False Mother Lode; IX. Northern Circuit: Rain in the North; X. New Mexico and Arizona; XI.
Borego, Yosemite, and Death Valley II; XII. This book, a collaboration between Weston and the writer Charis Wilson, resulted from work done on Weston's Guggenheim Fellowship, the first ever given to a photographer. Wilson's text details their adventures on this two-year camping tour of the West, providing a fine accompaniment to Weston's photographs. Good plus in a good dust jacket.
Possibly a library reference copy or a copy donated to a library. Stamp to the top fore edge which may be a personal designation rather than that of a library. Discard pocket on rear pastedown. Upper right hand corner front board curled downward.
Lower right hand corner frayed. Internally, the first free endpaper has a long vertical crease.
Dated gift inscription on the first free endpaper below the signature of Edward Weston. Scattered light foxing to some of the text and to a few of the images. Bookstore sticker to rear pastedown. DJ lightly soiled and rubbed with moderate wear and some small tears to edges and to the top and bottom of the spine as well as some creasing. Light chipping to corners and edges.
Even though it has chips and closed tears at spine and extremities, all of the pictorial front panel remains intact.
